Voices from the clinical team

Visual communication is becoming central to how clinicians diagnose, gain informed consent and help patients understand their own care. Teaching students to show patients what they see, not only tell them, builds clinical confidence early and sets the standard for how modern dentistry should be practised. As AI and digital tools reshape the clinical environment, the students who master these fundamentals now will be the ones who lead with the most confidence. Dr Randeep Singh Gill, BDS · Founder, TechDental AI Adoption, Strategy and Transformation Leader

Throughout my clinical career, I've found that patients are far more engaged when they can see and understand their own oral health. The ACTEON C50 intraoral camera makes this possible, turning clinical observations into clear, meaningful discussions that support trust and informed decision-making. As Global Education Manager at ACTEON, I'm passionate about giving students access to technologies that enhance both learning and patient care. Early exposure to the C50 helps students develop confidence in communication, strengthen their clinical skills, and gain hands-on experience with the digital workflows that are becoming integral to modern dentistry. I really enjoyed learning about the intra-oral camera. It's something I wish we would have had on clinic as students because it would have really helped visually with the caries highlighter, especially when showing patients. When we first started on clinic, spotting caries was something that we were all worried about missing, this camera would really help to solidify our knowledge and show patients before and after pictures. Most patients don't understand radiographs so showing them physically would be really beneficial. Lily Alderson · DHT Student, Eastman Dental Hospital

As both a Dental Hygienist/Therapist and a Clinical Educator, one of my absolute non-negotiables in periodontal care is the use of intraoral photography. Every periodontal consultation and hygiene appointment I carry out includes intraoral images, as I believe they are one of the most valuable tools we have for patient education, treatment planning, clinical documentation and reflection. At Anna House Dental Clinic, I supervise dental hygiene and therapy students treating patients, and I actively encourage them to adopt the same approach from the very beginning of their careers. Intraoral cameras completely change the way students communicate with patients. Rather than simply explaining what they can see, they can show patients exactly what is happening inside their mouths. This creates greater understanding, improves patient engagement and helps patients take ownership of their oral health. From an educational perspective, the benefits are enormous. Students develop greater confidence because they are able to clearly see the results of their work through high-quality before and after images. These photographs also provide an invaluable opportunity for clinical reflection, allowing students to review their treatment, discuss cases in detail and identify areas for continuous improvement. The images have also become an excellent teaching resource. They allow us to build a library of real clinical cases, helping students recognise normal anatomy, developmental variations, periodontal conditions, restorative defects and oral abnormalities. Combining these images with radiographs and clinical notes enables students to strengthen their diagnostic skills, improve treatment planning and develop a more comprehensive understanding of patient care. For me, intraoral photography is far more than simply taking pictures. It has become an essential educational tool that supports patient communication, clinical documentation, reflective practice and diagnostic learning. It is helping to shape a new generation of clinicians who are more observant, more confident and better equipped to deliver exceptional patient care. Charlotte Benson · RDHT and CE

The C50 intra oral camera is an amazing tool that could be used for patient motivation, mapping progression, aiding explanations and for documentation! I believe the use of this tool should be implemented in dental schools, as it would have been great to put these photos into our clinical notes and also to track our own clinical progress for use in portfolios. Jada Wallace · Student - Eastman Dental Hospital
